Reinhard Cate is an Austrian-Filipino American writer, producer and director. His photo, video, and written work has appeared in the BBC World News, ABC News, Frontline World, the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, the New York Post, the New York Daily News and Alpinist Magazine. He’s also directed two documentaries: “A Divided House” which focused in on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the West Bank and “Soccer Without Borders”, that highlighted the program of the same name that assists refugee and immigrant children using soccer across the U.S.

Before his work in storytelling, Reinhard has had a diverse career working previously as an immigration law paralegal for Catholic Charities in NYC, and as a researcher and development economist. His research has focused on income inequality and the unbanked and armed conflict and foreign direct investment in which his thesis work was published alongside his advisor Professor Sunny Wong.

As a Human Terrain Analyst with the U.S. Department of Defense in Afghanistan, Reinhard did research on the tribal and ethnic factors impacting local police recruitment and advised U.S. Special Forces teams from 2011-2012 in Ghazni, Takhar and Kandahar provinces. The experience was the basis for his screenplay Outside the Wire, which was an AFF Second Rounder and an Academy Nicholl Fellowship Top 10% in 2020 and Top 20% in 2021. It also received placements in Screencraft and The Script Lab contests and received an 8/10 on The Blacklist website.

Reinhard’s other screenplay “Terp”, an interpreter driven thriller also received an 8/10 on the Blacklist Website. And his other script “First Ascent”, a horror thriller set on the world’s highest unclimbed peak, has placed in Screencraft, Final Draft’s Big Break and the Page International Screenwriting Awards. Currently, Reinhard works for Ripple where he’s helped shape the company’s video and photo, and podcast content as a manager for the company’s media production. He’s created external video series for the company and leads major production around the world as an executive producer and director for events, customer testimonials and short documentaries.

Reinhard holds a B.S. in Political Science from Santa Clara University, an M.A. in Journalism from New York University and an M.S. in Development Economics from the University of San Francisco. When Reinhard isn’t working or writing, he’s either spending time with his wife and two children, climbing, skiing or surfing.
